Identify categories of critiques discussed in the text about the viability of the democratic peace theory. What do they entail? Do you agree or disagree with these critiques?

What is cognitive dissonance? What problems can it cause in decision making?

What are the lessons of history that our generation can learn in order to avoid conflicts in the future?

One version of the rational action model of decision making is expected utility theory. Examine the major tenets of this theory. How are payoffs and probability handled by proponents of this theory?

Chapter 8

Liberals claim that free trade reduces the probability of conflict. Why would an increase in free trade lessen the likelihood of conflict? What evidence can you discuss that supports this claim?

Misperception is considered to be a significant cause of war. What are some ways in which individuals and leaders could avoid misperception which, in turn, should help to avoid conflict

How are the causes of civil wars and contentious politics different from the causes of interstate warfare? Use examples discussed in the text to highlight your differences.

Chapter 9

Describe the security dilemma. What are some modern day examples of this dilemma in action?
