1. Pick one of the topics from the list provided below as the subject . (The topic is "The controversial Plan B, One-Step, over-the-counter birth control morning after pill.")
2. The slide limit for your presentation is 16 slides.
3. The slides should be presented in the following order and you have been given a minimum and maximum number of slides for each section of the presentation. You may use less than the maximum but you may not use less than the minimum number of slides given (E.g., You may use Slides 2-6 [versus Slides 2-8] to discuss the medications or class of medications at the center of the controversy. So you used less than 8 but not less than 2 slides in this section).
Slide 1: Title slide with controversy topic identified and your name, date, course name and number and instructor's name
Slide 2-8: Discuss the medication (or class of medication) at the center of the controversy:
• When was the medication introduced to the public?
• What is the indication for the medication, including the patient population that most commonly receives a prescription for the medication (age, sex, ethnicity)
• What are the pharmacokinetics for the medication?
• What is the pharmacodynamics for the medication? (state Molecular mechanism clearly)
• How is the medication dosed?
• What kind of monitoring is required with the medication?
• What are some of the most common side effects?
• What is the average cost of the medication?
• Identify a clinical practice guideline or professional group of healthcare providers that recommend the use of the medication? Describe the clinical guideline including the author(s) or professional group that supports it. Include how the guideline came to be: consensus, random control trials, etc. Remember to cite the source of your facts within the presentation.
Slide 9-12: Identify and describe the controversy that surrounds the use of this medication or class of medications, in detail. Relate it to economics, ethics, morality, politics, medication side effects, medication effectiveness, access to treatment, or a combination of these. Who has been impacted by the controversy? What does the literature conclude (or not) about the use of the medication or class of medication? You will use peer-reviewed articles that are current within 5 years to conduct your research. You will use no less than 5 articles and no more than 10. In addition, you may use your textbook, Epocrates (or another drug reference website). Be specific and cite the source of your facts within the presentation.
Slide 13-14: What are alternatives to the controversial medication or class of medications? Name at least 2 alternatives, how they are dosed, side effects, cost, and how they are monitored. Cite the source of your facts within the presentation.
Slide 15- Decide whether you will use this medication in your own clinical practice. Will you prescribe it? Will you prescribe it with caveats? Will you use an alternative?
