Concepts

1. Network- Is a group of computers and other devices that are interconnected to share information. These devices can be servers, computers, phones, and cameras. They are connected together by some sort of connection media. This media can be serial cables, twisted pair Ethernet cables, fiber, coaxial cables, and WiFi radio signals.

2. Network Interface- The data that is shared over a network is transmitted over the network media. In order for the data to reach the media, the media must be plugged into a network interface card. There are several types of network interface cards out there and the one that is to be selected depends on the type of media being used. The purpose of the network interface card is to convert the data into a signal whether it be electrical signals, light signals, or radio waves.

3. Network Protocols- A network protocol is a standard on how the data is formatted. These protocols allow devices using the same protocol to communicate. Such Protocols are TCP, and UDP.

4. Sharing Peripherals- Certain peripherals such as printers and scanners are able to be connected to a network allowing an organization to share these devices so that several users can utilize the resource. This allows for reduced cost on devices since every user would not require these peripherals.

5. Network Storage- Network storage is a central storage space on a network that allows an organization to store all of its data in one location. This allows for increased security of the information, reduced storage space on the user devices, and easier backups. This capability also allows a user the ability to access his/her files from any device connected to the network.

6. Network Benefits- Networks allow for groups to collaborate easier. This can be accomplished by using email, using consolidated storage to share and compile files. Networks give organzations the ability to replace traditional telephones with improves VoIP phones reducing the cost for voices services.

7. Peer-to-Peer Network- Host to not have specific roles. One machine can be sharing a printer, another a scanner, and they all could be sharing a folder. Each machine can provide and consume network services. They are easily implement and require little to no administration. Ideal for small networks, terrible for larger ones requiring more administration. Difficult to secure and protect user devices.

8. Client-Server Network- The server in this network provides services to user devices, while the user devices can consume these services. Such services are file share services, printing services, and web services.

9. Client Operating System- In a client-server environment client workstations are required to use a desktop operating system such as Windows 10. This operating system allows users to do their daily work with client applications such as word, excel, powerpoint.

10. Server Operating System- There are many types of server operating systems out there such as Apache and Microsoft Server 2012. These operating systems are designed to perform server tasks such as domain services, printer sharing, file sharing, and several all network resource functions.
