STEP Standard 1 - Contextual Factors: Knowing Your School and Community, Part I

Student Teaching Evaluation of Performance (STEP) is the process for preparing and implementing a unit of instruction.

By understanding the community and school environment and the makeup of the classroom, you will be able to strategically meet the overall needs of your students. In the first two weeks of student teaching, you should focus on learning about the students you will be working with.

Review the geographic, district, and school demographics of your student teaching classroom. Utilize the district or school website, your cooperating teacher/mentor, or school administrator for this information. You may also use your state Department of Education website for statistical data on community and school demographics.

Complete STEP Standard 1 Part I that includes:

Geographic Location

Describe the geographic data for your cooperating school, such as rural, urban, suburban, etc. Include the city and state, population of the city, stability of the community (state of growth, decline, or stability), and the perception of the level of community support for education. Discuss the possible effect these characteristics could have on the planning, delivery, and assessment of your unit. Cite the references used for this information.

District Demographics

Describe thedistrict demographic data, including statistical data relating to the population and particular groups within it, for your cooperating school district. Include the name of school district and grades served, the number of schools in the district, the number of students enrolled in the district and the percentage of students in the district receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Discuss the possible affect these characteristics could have on the planning, delivery, and assessment of your unit. Cite the references used for this information.

School Demographics

Describe the school demographic data for your cooperating school. Include the name of the school and grades served, number of students enrolled, percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, and the academic achievement ranking/label of the school. Discuss the possible effect these characteristics could have on the planning, delivery, and assessment of your unit. Cite the references used for this information.

Complete each section of the "STEP Template" as directed in your weekly assignments. Submit the entire template each week so your instructor can see the progression. You are expected to teach the unit you are preparing by the end of week 8.

By analyzing the student demographics, environmental factors, and student academic factors, you will be able to strategically meet the overall needs of your students. This contextual data will assist you in developing your instructional unit, which you are expected to teach by the end of week 8.

Student Demographic Factors

Describe the demographic data for the students in your cooperating classroom. Include grade levels and content areas, total number of students, total number of boys/number of girls, age range represented, cultures/ethnicities represented, and socioeconomic information of your students.

Environmental Factors

Describe the environmental factors of your cooperating classroom. Include the physical room arrangement, available classroom resources, the level of parental involvement, and the availability of and/or access to technology.

Student Academic Factors

Complete the table including the number of students whose primary language is other than English, have an IEP or a 504 plan, are gifted, receive educational services outside of the classroom (e.g., reading/math intervention, speech services, and special education services), and non-labeled students (e.g., non-IEP, non-ADA, Section 504) who are behaviorally or academically challenged.
