There are significant variations in emergency management between developing and established nations. There are also differences between well-developed, established nations. You can see this by comparing Japan to India, China, or Haiti relative to earthquakes; or review the U.S. concerning hurricane Sandy and the well-published tsunami and nuclear fallout in Japan. In this activity, you will discuss those differences and implications.

• What variations in emergency management might occur due to a nation's developmental status; from local to national levels?

• Consider the differences between the major earthquakes in Japan and Haiti, and their statuses 1 year-2 years-or more from the time of the disaster. Discuss the implications in the field of emergency management.

Emergency management is advancing as a field of study and as a profession. This discussion will examine what it takes to become an emergency manager. You will consider the expected qualifications of an effective emergency manager. Consider what degree programs would work best, and overall, what defines the field as a profession.
