Chapter 9 presents a proactive approach to system safety. The safety professional should make every effort to understand the concepts of systems safety as noted in this chapter because the days of allowing an individual to find the problem is no longer acceptable. Chapter 10 discusses the importance of enlisting support, not only from resources but also from commitment to holding all members of the management team responsible and accountable for safety in their own operations. Chapter 11 reviews the theories of motivation. Job enrichment and employee empowerment are discussed as methods to increase employee buy-in to the safety process.

• Explain the OSHA guidelines for safety management.
• Define the terminology associated with the study of psychology.
• Explain the concepts associated with motivation and safety.
• Differentiate between Behavioral and Goal-directed theories of motivation.
• Explain the principles associated with behavior modification and safety.
• Describe the importance of establishing a positive safety culture.
• Identify the pitfalls inherent in safety incentive programs.
• Describe the benefits of employer empowerment and job enrichment.

Lesson Submission

Part I.

Develop a Fault Tree Analysis using at least 10 events with both "and" and "or" gates with the end event "Construction worker falls from scaffolding and breaks his back" You may scan the fault tree and send the electronic file it or just mail it to me at the address below.

Part II.

Create a Job Safety Analysis page for a basic task or job of your choosing. Ideas include: changing the oil in your car, bussing dishes in the cafeteria, giving your pet alligator a pedicure......

Part III.

1. Provide a brief description for each of the 5 functions of management.
2. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of safety incentive programs.
3. Draw Maslow's Needs-Hierarchy model and provide examples for each needs
level.
4. What are the 3 essential motives of McClelland's Need Achievement Theory?
5. Conduct a safety inspection of either your home or workplace and list hazards which need to be addressed. Recommend a hazard control for each and provide a timetable for completion of the control. (This question combines elements of several chapters in your text.)
