Part 1:
Special Note: This is a two-part assignment. Option 1 Requires and Summary and References. Option 2 Requires an Outline and References. The Summary/Outline should be separate from the essay. Keep all in APA Format.
For the primary review of concepts in this course, you will be responsible for taking a journey of application. Your project will need to reflect your journey in some way. You have learned about the various aspects of starting a business in your previous courses. You have gone through the process of creating a business plan. It is important, however, that you have an understanding of how all the pieces come together and more importantly, all the pitfalls that can occur even with a carefully laid out plan. For your course project, you have several options:
1. OPTION #1 Small Business Shadowing: For this project, you will choose a small business in your local community and request an interview with the business owner. Your goal is to gain access to shadow him/her for a period of 4 weeks (1-2 hrs per week) in order to gain insight into some of the everyday problems that the owner faces. You can think of this as a mini-internship, however, it is important that you choose your small business carefully as you will want an owner who is willing to discuss high level decision making with you in order for you to further your educational journey.
2. OPTION #2 Family Owned Business: Thinking of taking over a family business or opening a family business? Do a detailed research project on family owned businesses including analysis from 3 examples (public or private) that lend insight into the pros and cons of family owned enterprises.
All projects should be 12-15 pages in length and should integrate 7-10 sources from recent literature (go to the online library). Papers should be in APA format. For Part 1, complete the following items:
Shadowers: You need to submit a progress report for the first 2 weeks "on the job." What were some of the things that surprised you? What did you learn that you did not already know? Submit a list of all the references for your paper.
Family Reporters: You will need to submit an outline this week for your paper. Submit a list of all the references for your paper.
