Graphing Statistics with Specialized Statistical Software

This week you all will download a specialized software (other than Excel). To do this, you will need to download the Word document (see attached) with Each table will have special instructions on what to do in the specialized software.

The intent of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate that you have a basic understanding of specialized statistical software. In this assignment, you will need to use specialized statistical software to:

Create a Pie Chart

Create a 2-Tier Bar Graph

Calculate Statistics

You can choose which specialized software to use but nothing from Excel.

After you have created the graphs and statistical calculations using the specialized software you have chosen, take a screenshot and paste each into a Word document for submission (3 scenarios). Include an introduction that explains your reason for choosing your particular software and any challenges you faced.

Note: If you're unsure of how to take a screenshot, checkout the take-a-screenshot org website or perform an Internet search using "How do I take a screenshot?" as your search phrase.

Add a short introduction above your screenshots that states which specialized statistical software you decided to use and why you chose it. Also describe any challenges you encountered while completing the assignment and how you handled those challenges.

Lesson Content

Sometimes when it comes to performing statistical data analysis, Excel simply isn't enough. Two examples of specialized statistical software are:

R (open-source software that is available for free download)
SPSS Statistics (software from IBM available with a 14-day free trial)

Up and Running with R

This training material introduces the R statistical processing language, including how to install R on your computer, read data from SPSS and spreadsheets, and use packages for advanced R functions.

The course continues with examples on how to create charts and plots, check statistical assumptions and the reliability of your data, look for data outliers, and use other data analysis tools. Finally, learn how to get charts and tables out of R and share your results with presentations and web pages.
