ASSIGNMENT

Find an article about a recent event (something that occurred within the last 5 years) that relates to one of the "Hot Topics in Environmental Health" listed in Table 1-3 in your book (page 20). Start a thread under Discussion Board #1 and post a link to your article. Please ensure that your link is to a reputable news source. Then in your thread, briefly summarize your article and describe how it relates to the "hot topic" you chose. Next choose one of the "Professions Involved in Environmental Health" listed in Table 1-4 of your book (page 21) and tell me what role someone in that profession might play in the event you chose.

Article - Costs and Consequences of the Fukushima Daiichi Disaster By Steven Starr

Article is about the Fukishima Daiichi nuclear power plant which was impacted by an earthquake and subsequent tsunami March 2011. The damage from the earthquake resulted in massive radioactive contamination of the Japanese mainland. (Please give a more detailed summary - remember your response needs to be at least 200 words).

This would relate to environmental protection, hazardous waste, nuclear power, pollution and radioactive waste on the "Hot Topics" list. (Again, this is a brief example. You should elaborate on how it relates).

An occupational hygienist also known as an industrial hygienist might help identify areas of contamination. An IH would likely conduct testing using radiation detector to determine the boundaries of contamination and identify groups in the population who may have been exposed to the radiation based on their locations. They may also use modeling to estimate the likely areas of impact as the contamination spreads through water and soil. (Again, please elaborate. Do a little research here about the career you've chosen from the list and put together a thorough response).

HELPFUL HINTS:

Remember to look at the syllabus and follow the guidelines there. Your post must be at least 200 words. In addition, you are required to post a response of at least 50 words on 2 of your classmate's threads. Remember that if you are going to pull verbatim from your article, that you need to quote it to avoid plagiarism. Also, keep in mind the etiquette expectations.
