Assignment

Choose a destination that is known for 'over-tourism' from the following destinations;

• Rome, Italy
• Amsterdam, Netherlands
• Santorini, Greece
• Machu Piccchu, Peru

Discussion questions:

1. Describe two community development issues facing the tourism and hospitality industries in the region you have chosen, in addition to over-tourism.

2. Explain how the situation has changed (positively or negatively) over the last decade (be specific).

3. Who are the key players in bringing the issue and solutions forward? (i.e. DMO, municipality, government, other stakeholder groups). Describe the roles of each and what specific actions have been taken? Have they been successful?

4. What other innovative and/or collaborative solutions to the community development challenges you have identified should be considered or have been successfully implemented? (You could consider this recommendations, rooted in research and may use other destinations to compare/contrast).

Theoretical concepts from the course should be integrated into your response and where appropriate other course materials may also be utilized (and cited appropriately). Your submission must be professional in appearance and directly connected to class learning and content to demonstrate your ability to apply community development concepts.

Your paper should include:

• A brief introduction of the destination (population, destination attributes, number of tourists annually, visitor spending)

• Overview of the community development issue(s) and a strong thesis statement.

• Definitions of key terms

• A summary and analysis of the issues, including potential solutions. Here is where you can discuss what has occured over the last decade, identify key stakeholders, what actions have been taken and what solutions have been tried/used.

• Connect your analysis to at least five relevant scholarly sources plus materials used throughout the course. Additional sources maybe also used to support your position.

• Provide answers to all of the discussion questions in a concise, logical format. Headings and a table of contents should NOT be used in a formal academic paper.

• Direct application of course concepts and key learnings.

• A strong conclusion which sums up your paper and ties your key points together.

• In-text citations for all references, using APA and a complete reference list.

• This assignment may NOT exceed 2800 words (excluding title page and references).
