Option 1:

•Write an article for the newsletter of an actual or fictitious professional organization. This article should be 3-5 pages in length. The focus of the article should be a clinical or professional issue of interest to you.

•Prepare a cover letter to the editor of the newsletter.

•Prepare a memo to me describing the newsletter, its readership, and the purpose of the article.

Option 2:

Collect information regarding communication skills used by individuals in health care.

• Interview at least three individuals in a specific occupation you are curious about or aspire to. Determine how much and what kind of writing they do.

- Do they make oral presentations
- How much time do they spend in telephone communication?
- Do they use e-mail? If so, how much and for what?
- What other technology do they use for communication?
- What recommendations do they have for training for this position?

• Write a 3 - 5 page report that discusses the findings from your interviews. Use previous readings and resources to substantiate report contents. - What conclusions can you draw regarding communication skills in this field?

- What recommendations would you make for individuals preparing to enter this field?

• Prepare a 1 page cover memo to me. Include a description of the health care organizations at which you conducted your interviews, and the occupation you have chosen to write about.

Option 3:

Assume that you have applied for a management position within your organization. You have reviewed the position description. The search committee has requested that all candidates submit the following documents, in addition to their resumes:

• A cover letter highlighting their accomplishments and qualifications for the position.

•A 1-2 page statement outlining their ideas and beliefs about the role of the manager within the organization.

• A Professional Development Plan. The plan should include your professional goals for years 1, 3 and 5 of your tenure as manager, should you be hired for the position. Detail specific strategies to accomplish each goal.

•Prepare a memo to me describing the organization and the specific position for which you have applied.
