Advantages and Disadvantages of Team Cohesiveness

1. Performance Norms

Performance norms are the standards of quality and quantity of work expected from each team member. Not all team members perform alike, so the high performers may take on work from other team members who may not have the same ability to produce. This may be a deficit in skills, but this places a burden on the high performers. Low performance can also cause conflict and resentment from the high performers.

2. Groupthink

"Groupthink" means that everyone agrees and the individuals in the team lose their individual identities and perspectives. This situation keeps creative or new ideas from being expressed.

3. Resisting Change

• Low tolerance for change can happen when a team has founding members and new members join. If the original members of the team are inflexible to the changes in purpose or team composition, they may ignore new members as being disruptive outsiders.

4. Team Goals vs Organizational Goals

Team goals can sometimes take precedence over organizational goals. In this case, the welfare of the team and its members is a higher priority than the organizational goals.
