Part 2

One of the problems with the current tendency to overemphasize reading and mathematics instruction while reducing science and social studies curriculum is that science and social studies are the main content areas of the PK-3 years. Kids' interests in the physical and social worlds provide the motivation and real life context for learning the process skills of reading and mathematics. I've asked you to write your project plan on history, so let's dig into the broader topic of social studies.

Politics is in the air, with dramatic announcements, protests, and debates on TV, the Internet, and in homes. (Think about what questions children might have about government, and then and then list specific activities you could do and materials you might use to help them explore their questions about government or to represent/re-enact government)

Ex:

"Considering this past year was an election year I would think students would have lots of questions about election day. So, I would create an opportunity for students to explore their questions about the election process. I would start by reading the Dr. Seuss book One Vote, Two Vote, I Vote, You Vote and distributing Election Journals to each student to record their thoughts, ideas, opinions, data and so on. After reading the book we would discuss vocabulary words such as President, vote, elect, informed decision, and ballot. We would then talk about the requirements to become President and some of the jobs and responsibilities of the President. The students would then fill out a voter registration form. Students will then have the opportunity to vote on a class snack. Their choices would be crackers, grapes, or cookies. The students can then discuss their thoughts and opinions about their choices and conduct some research about the pros and cons of each choice in their journals. On voting day students will cast their ballots. Once everyone has cast their ballot we will tally and graph the results. Then, of course, the next day's snack would be the winner of the election."
