1. Explain the Tricare Program and basic eligibility requirements

2. Describe three Tricare plans within the program

3. Explain the CHAMPVA Program and Eligibility Requirements

4. Explain the difference between a par and non-par provider for these military plans

5. Describe some covered services of these military plans and services that may require authorization.

Review each case study and then answer the questions that follow.

Case 1: Shannon was working as a hostess for Johnson's Family Diner. Part of her job was to take and serve drink orders to customers she escorted to their tables. One night, she was carrying a tray of drinks and accidentally slipped and fell. She twisted her ankle and was unable to walk. Johnson restaurant had a contract with First Care to provide medical treatment to their workers. Shannon was taken to the clinic where she was examined by the health care provider. She was found to have a bad sprain, but no fracture. She was advised to stay off work for two weeks.

Case 2: Marvin is an independent contractor hired by J&S Flooring to install carpeting within customer's homes. Marvin usually had a team of worker's to help him, but today he was missing two members of his team. This meant he may have to work longer, but he was confident he and the others could get the job done. As Marvin was taking the carpet out of the truck, it accidentally fell on his foot. He was in a lot of pain, but he pushed through the work. Later, that night, due to the swelling of his toe and foot. he decided to get things checked out and it was discovered that he had a fracture across the top if his foot. He was casted and told to remain off work for the duration of the fracture care, which would be about 6-8 weeks.

Case 3: Samuel is a truck driver for Hanson's Moving Company. He is required to be certified to drive the large truck. At the time of treatment, he was required to have a drug screen. He was later diagnosed with whiplash and his drug screen was positive for cocaine.

Case 4: Sherry, was working at the airport and was helping customers to check their baggage. A customer became irate because he was told his bag weighed over 50 pounds, so he would need to pay an additional 50 dollars to check his bag. He was very argumentative and was refusing to take his bag off the scale and insisted he would not pay. As his anger brewed, he picked up the bag and tossed it at the agent. The agent fell to the floor, but hit her head on the edge of the bag belt and suffered an open wound. She was taken to the company clinic and received five sutures. She was advised to remain off work for three days.

He was told his injuries would need to be assessed by the orthopedic surgeon and he may have to have surgery. He was later advised, he would not ever be able to return to work as a roofer.
