Assignment Questions -

1. Identify an area of your life in which you feel, and others would agree, that you demonstrate communication competence. How are you personally motivated, personally knowledgeable, and what skills do you demonstrate in this area?

2. How has your self-concept and self-esteem changed as you have aged? Are there areas that you desire to continue to explore and change?

3. Speaking appropriately is important and often depends upon the communication setting. What guidelines would you suggest for a retail business setting? For a classroom setting? For a sporting event, such as a little league game? For a conference religious retreat? For a hip hop concert?

4. Visit the FREE HUGS CAMPAIGN website and read about the campaign to promote more conscious touch. Why do you think this campaign has received such a strong reaction? Do you think our society is more or less open to touch than a generation ago? Would this campaign have been possible 50 years ago? 100 years ago?

5. Take the listening quiz. What were your results? Do you agree or disagree?

6. How would you describe your culture to others? How do you celebrate this culture? (For example, what food do you eat? What holidays do you observe? What events are important to your culture?) What are some stereotypes that others have of your culture? How do these make you feel? What would you say to help people who hold that stereotype understand your culture more accurately?
