Assignment: Managerial Decision:

Part one: "Case Study VII " Johnson, M. A., & Stratton, W. E. (2009). Training session conflict. Journal of Critical Incidents, 2(2009), 150-155

After reading the case study, draft a one-page analysis of the situation, and consider what you would do as the leader in that situation. Summarize what happened at the training event with the group members. How might decision bias have played into the situation? Address how group elements might have affected the situation (e.g., groupthink, groupshift, deindividuation). Are there steps that could have been taken before conflict arose? Assuming there was nothing that could be done to prevent the situation, what could you do the following morning? How would you involve the group, if at all, in your resolution to the situation? The purpose of this assignment is for you to think critically about managers and other leaders working with groups and the process leaders use to make important decisions within groups. Consider how important it is to collect all of the facts before making an important decision for a group or with a group.

1. When should employees participate in decision-making, and why? (75 min word count)

2. What is groupthink, and what effect does it have on decision-making? What is consensus building, and how does it differ from groupthink? ( min 75 word)

3. The chief executive officer (CEO) of a small manufacturing business wants to form a committee to make decisions about a new company policy for the use of personal devices in the workplace. What advice would you give him or her and the committee members about how to be sure the group succeeds at making a good decision?

3. Using a real-world entity like a recipe file or collection of some sort that can be stored in a database, divide this information into fields and record types. Explain the steps you need to take to normalize the data.

4. Explain in your own words the differences between sorting and indexing.

5. Imagine that you must access a library card catalog using SQL. Write an SQL query that you would use to search for any books by J. J. Parsons in a table called Books, where author's names are stored in a field called Title.

6. Explain the extent to which encryption, user privileges, and audits can secure a database.
