It should be something you already know about, but you will need to use sources to add information and back you up. It can be a place, a country, a famous person, an event, a scientific matter, a profession, a disease, ...
When you write an informative essay (or expository essay), your goal is to share knowledge with your reader. A good topic would be one that
• is interesting to you
• provides new information (either an update on a familiar topic or information that most people don't already know)
• can be explained in 5-6 pages
• can be supported by credible evidence (sources)
As you look for a topic, you can start with your interests. Perhaps you have a question: What causes autism? Perhaps you have a problem: What is the best way to stop smoking? Perhaps you want to learn more about an idea that intrigues you: Is it possible to outgrow celiac disease? Why are more and more people allergic? Is red wine good for you or is it a myth introduced by the wine industry? But once you have come up with an answer, you need to write an informative essay, so you won't show two sides or argue. You will Just inform your reader(s) on this topic: "It is actually impossible to outgrow celiac disease, unlike other allergies." "Low fat is actually unhealthy." "The best way to stop smoking is by combining different methods." Once again it could also be about a country: "The culture and food of Mexico." It could be about an event: "Pearl Harbor." "The Rise of Hitler." Or it could be more general: "Presidential Elections in the USA." Or about a person you admire: Messi, Selena, Beyonce...
Since it is a synthesis, I want you to have two outside sources for this paper. They may be a reference book, a periodical, or a website. As usual, you will have 2 drafts to work on before you hand in the final version.
Your essay should have :
A clear introduction
With a hook
Some context on the topic
A clear thesis statement that explains what you are telling me about this topic.
