Assignment: Higher Education, 2000-Present

In this course, various topics about the reconfiguration of American higher education from 1673 to the present have been examined. Some of the topics include:

• The Past as Prologue: From 1900 to 2010.
• Higher Education's Unfinished Business from 1990 to 2010.
• Demographics and Diversity: The Changing Profile of Students.
• Big-Time Intercollegiate Sports: Education's Entertainment.
• Research Universities in an "Era of Big Bets" Federal Grants.
• State Universities and the New "A&M": Athletics and Medicine.
• The Gridlock of Funding for State Universities.
• The Millennium in Perspective: American Higher Education from Twentieth to Twenty-First Centuries.
• College Students in an Era of Commercialization and Consumerism.
• Rethinking the Historic Role of Governing Boards and Trustees.

Instructions

After watching the short video, Complex Change in Higher Education by Fred Buining, create a video, website, timeline (similar to the assignment in week three), essay, PowerPoint, or other creative way to address the following:

• Reflect on various changes that have influenced the reconfiguration of American higher education in the twenty-first century.

• Select two of the topics listed above that you feel have made the greatest impact on higher education. Critically analyze the influences of past eras on present-day higher education.

• Evaluate how these topics are impacting higher education today, and discuss recommendations for change.
Guidelines for the Final Project

• Essays should be between ten to twelve pages in length (not including the title and reference pages).

• Videos should be approximately eight to ten minutes in length.

• PowerPoint presentations should be between eight to twelve slides and include Speaker's notes, title, and reference slides.

• A timeline should include each of the covered eras with all of the above components addressed for each.

Graduate level writing requires adherence to APA format, must be free of mechanical and grammatical errors, and include at least five scholarly sources in addition to the course text and video. References should support your thinking and be cited in-text as well as in the required reference page.
