Assignment: Follow and journalize the ongoing case of Pennsylvania's redistricting.

This is a 40-point major assignment and will be do at the end of the course. Redistricting is usually the purview of the state legislature, however the PA Supreme Court declared that the current congressional districts as designed (gerrymandered) by the legislature are unconstitutional. The PA Supreme Court ordered that the state legislature had 3 weeks to redo.

The PA legislature is majority Republican and the PA Supreme Court is 5-2 Democratic.

You will have to read and analyze the material and do your own research to establish the procedural posture of the case (Who is suing who for what) and determine the status of the case. Then a review of how the defendants tried to move the case to US Supreme Court because of a constitutional issue. The case is fluid and there will be action in the near future.

We can use discussion board to show new information as it unfolds. As I write this on Friday Mar 2 there have been developments in the last two days. By the end of the course, if there has been no decision, you will write the opinion of how the Court's will rule. The Brennancenter.org website is a great central place to find the most current data and case filings.

The initial case filed by the League of Women Voters arguing that Democratic voters have been discriminated against by the redistricting plan of approved by the Republican majority in the PA State Legislature.
