Assignment: Analyzing Cyber Crime Trends Report
Identity theft, computer fraud, online phishing, Nigerian scams, and others are all common types of cyber crimes that have become of increasingly common in today's online environment. Every year, the Computer Security Institute (CSI) in partnership with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) puts together a Computer Crime and Security Survey. The purpose of this survey is to analyze cyber crime on an annual basis to establish trends and promote awareness.
For this assignment, you will need to access the most current CSI Computer Crime and Security Survey. Typically, a paid membership is required. However, you can access previous surveys free of charge. Follow the below directions to create a 4- to 5-page report.
This will be a two-part assignment.
Tasks:
Part I
In a 2-page analysis report, address the following:
• Results of a 2009 or newer CSI Computer Crime Security Survey that include:
o Estimated total number of respondents
o Estimated total loss due to cyber crime
o Summary of surveyed industries
o Identification of the top five types of attacks that occur today
o Evaluation of the details regarding the top five types of attacks and how they most typically occurred
Part II
• Locate and analyze a current cyber crime incident from the news.
• Write approximately 2-3 pages to include:
o Description of the cyber crime with information on how the attack took place.
o Determination of whether or not this type of cyber crime is referenced in the CSI Computer Crime Security Survey (if yes, then include description of the percentage of those types of attacks or crimes that were committed based on the survey).
o Recommendation of potential remedies, practices, or policies which could have helped prevent the attack or cyber crime.
Your final deliverable will be in a Microsoft Word document of approximately 4-5 pages in length and utilizes at least two scholarly/professional sources (beyond your textbook) in your research. Your paper should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
