How much CO₂ is released during the combustion of 1 tonne of coal? In this example we will assume that all 'element carbon' reacts with oxygen, viz.:-

C(12) + O₂(2x16) → CO₂ (44)

Using the relative atomic masses of carbon (12) and oxygen (16), we can estimate that 12 kg of carbon will produce 44 kg of CO₂. Therefore, each kilogram of carbon within coal will release (44/12) = 3.67 kg of CO₂.

Assignment B - Oil

Table 1 - Distribution of conventional oil reserves amongst the top ten producing regions of the world.

1. There are over 40 oil producing countries in the world. What percentage of world's conventional oil reserves are owned by the top 10 oil countries (Table 1). On a separate piece of paper, produce a pier chart to support your written answer?

2. Using Table 1 for your answer. What percentages of the world's oil occurs in Saudi Arabia? What percentage in the Middle East? Which og the top ten belong to OPEC? What percentage of worlds reserves are OPEC?

3. On Figure 3 draw the location of Bahrain, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE and the Straits of Hormuz.

4. Where do the Straits of Malacca, Turkish Straits & Suez Canaal occur? Which countries control them?

5. Why might countries such as the USA, Japan and those within Europe be concerned about who controls the Straits of Hormuz plus other maritime straits, such as Straits of Malacca, Turkish Straits & Suez Canaal?

6. (a) Using the data in Table, plot a graph or chart showing oil imported to the USA for 1973, 2002 & 2014.
