Directions: Imagine that your colleague, John Smith, is a new advisor in the academic office at your nationally accredited college. He is eager to learn about the Department of Education's reporting requirements, as he knows his job will require the gathering and reporting of data.

Compose a 500-1000 word email to John explaining the different types of reporting required by the Department of Education. Explain the basics of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Explain to John which higher education institutions are required to report and what types of data must be reported.

Directions: Using resources from the learning plan and other credible sources of your choice, prepare a PowerPoint presentation on the following information. Your PowerPoint presentation should have two parts:

Part 1: Summary of HEA and HEOA

1) Provide a brief summary of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965.

2) Provide a brief summary of the changes to HEA in 1998 and 2003.

3) Provide a brief summary of the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) of 2008, including the new reporting provisions that utilize Title IV funding.

4) Provide an update on the status of any reauthorizations of HEA or HEOA since 2008.

Part 2: Summary and Analysis of Regulatory Requirements

1) Discuss student loan default rates, high debt to income ratios, and gainful employment.

2) Explain how student loan default rates, debt to income ratios, and gainful employment are measured.

3) Answer the question: Are reporting requirements unfairly burdensome/unfairly applied to for-profit institutions? Why or why not?

4) Summarize arguments for and against applying these regulatory requirements to all educational institutions, not just for-profits. Consider especially the fates of degrees in non-vocational fields such as the humanities.

5) Answer the question: Do you think these regulatory requirements are having, or will have, the federal government's desired effect? Why or why not?
