Assignment 1: In Unit 3, you looked at a problem in the UB or Bridgeport area. Now it's your chance to look farther and find an issue in America that you'd like to learn more about. Choose a problem that interests you that you would like to spend time researching. Once you've gathered at least five sources, you will write a paper that explains the problem and propose what you believe is the best solution.

The first step is to decide what you'd like to look into. You will upload either a question you'd like to answer or the topic you'd like to research. Remember, be as specific as possible. For example: "What is the best way to prevent mass shootings?" or "Why is college so expensive in the US, as opposed to other countries?"

Assignment 2: Provide the correct MLA citations for 2 sources you plan to use for your research here.

You will need to find 2 more (for a total of 4) for the annotated bibliography and research paper, but this is to help you get started.

Assignment 3: You need to provide the first entry for your annotated bibliography. Choose one source to annotate, the source you feel most confident with to begin. You will need to follow the directions below, providing the MLA citation, a summary of the most important parts (including paragraphs and quotation(s)), your assessment of the source, and a reflection of how it will contribute to your project as a whole.

Please review the directions carefully (As per other file attached).

Assignment 4: Please provide the annotations for your 2nd and 3rd sources(of 4). Remember to carefully follow the directions for an annotated bibliography.

Assignment 5: Provide the annotation for your 4th source. Remember to follow the guidelines for an annotated bibliography.

Final Assignment: This paper will involve identifying a problem in the United States and learning more about it so you can effectively speak about it and call attention to it.

You will pull together the research you gathered from your 4 sources and use it to write a persuasive letter either to the President of the United States or to a Connecticut senator.

In the letter, you will present the problem, use evidence from your research to explain why it's serious, and why it needs to be addressed. You can even propose possible solutions. Use a formal tone, and consider the most effective and persuasive ways to present your information so that you will convince your reader that they should care about the problem and take action.

Although it is in letter form, it must follow the MLA guidelines we've been using this semester.

The paper must:

1. Explore a problem or issue using at least 5 academic and reliable sources

2. Have a clear thesis: an angle from which you approach the topic, and a point to prove through research

3. Include quotations, paraphrase, and summary from each of the 5 sources

4. Use proper MLA format to provide in-text citations and a works cited list

5. Include a catchy introduction that contains the thesis, fully formed body paragraphs with transitions, and a conclusion that leaves the reader with a sense for why this topic matters

6. Avoid awkward phrases like "As I've stated before" or "In conclusion" that draw attention to the fact that we're reading a paper

7. Avoid run-ons and passive voice.
