Assignment 1: Higher Education Governance

This assignment will assess Competency 1: Examine the legal structure and governance of higher education and how the judicial system affects an institution's policies and practices.

Directions: Write a 500-1000 word paper discussing the following: Choose one insitution from each category (public, nonprofit, and for-profit) and answer each of the following questions about it.

1) What is the board called?

2) Who comprises the board?

3) What do you think each member of the board brings to it?

4) Who is the highest-ranking administrator under the board?

5) Who is the highest-ranking academic administrator other than the above, if applicable?

6) Who is the highest-ranking financial officer?

7) Does the institution have an Office of General Counsel?

You should be able to locate this information from a search of your chosen university's website.

After you have answered the questions above, compare and contrast each of the three types of institutions' governing structures. In your analysis, consider: 1) What are the differences and what are the similarities. 2) Why do the different types have different governing structures--what are the advantages and disadvantages of each, and why are certain structures better suited to certain types of institutions? 3) What did you find most surprising or interesting in your study?

Assignment 2: Higher Education Court Cases and Senate Report

This assignment will assess Competency 1: Examine the legal structure and governance of higher education and how the judicial system affects an institution's policies and practices.

Directions: Write a 1500-2000 word paper with two sections.

In Section 1, provide a summary, comparison of the cases, and analysis of how these cases may affect operations at for-profit institutions of higher education.

In Section 2, provide a summary and analysis of US Senator Tom Harkin's 2012 report For Profit Higher Education: The Failure to Safeguard the Federal Investment and Ensure Student Success.

1) Read the Executive Summary from "Part I: Majority Final Report on For-Profit Higher Education" (approximately 10 pages)

2) Read the individual profiles in "Part II: Profiles of 30 For-Profit Education Companies" of:

1) Apollo Group, Inc.

2) Grand Canyon Education, Inc.

Write an analysis that answers the following questions:

• Compare and contrast the reviews of the four institutions. Which insitutions fare better in the report, and why?

• What were the most scathing remarks made about for-profit education institutions as a whole and for each of the four institutions or corporations individually?

• What were the positive remarks made about for-profit education institutions as a whole and for each of the four institutions or corporations individually?

Assignment 3: Research Paper Topic

This assignment assesses competency 1. ASSESS the important issues facing the transportation industry.

Directions

For this assignment, answer the following prompt: Evaluate the role that aviation plays in our daily lives. How might our world be different without aviation? Refer to Chapter 1 of your textbook to get started with your answer.

This course requires you to research and write a research paper on an aviation transportation topic which has been approved by your instructor. Remember that the nature of the class includes air transportation topics that include aviation accidents and investigations, air carrier regulations or the history of air transportation. Your research paper should address/describe the issue, its background/history, its effects on transportation as well as provide at least two recommendations for solutions to solve/improve the situation.

Research paper requirements:

• 1000 words / 4 pages
• Times New Roman 12 pt. font, double spaced
• APA style format
• Title page and References
• Reference page should include a minimum of three scholarly references (blogs and Wiki pages are not acceptable).
