Assignment 1 - 3 pages

Since your graduation from the Online Campus, you have decided to pursue a career in corrections. After going through the application process for 16 months, you have been hired as a Federal Correctional Officer in your home state; it is very unusual for someone to graduate and then go directly into federal service.

The warden likes to pick recent graduates and new hires to give classes to fellow guards so they will have the latest teachings from the universities. The warden, Ms. Sarah Jones, has asked you to give such a class on the below listed topics and questions; however, she first wants you to write a paper of 2-3 pages for her review so she can see what the class will entail.

Warden Jones gives you the following principles and questions:

One of the first prison systems was called the Pennsylvania System. The ideology of this system was used in the Eastern State Penitentiary in the early 1800s. This system had very definite ideas on how a prison should be organized and managed. The operation of this prison was based on the following 5 general principles (Clear, Cole, &Reisig, 2006):

1. Do not treat prisoners harshly, but instruct them that hard and selective forms of suffering could change their lives.

2. Solitary confinement will prevent further corruption.

3. Offenders should reflect on their transgressions and repent.

4. Solitary confinement is considered punishment.

5. Solitary confinement is economical.

Discuss the following:

• Who actually formed these ideas?

• Expand upon the ideas of the 5 general principles.

o Why do you think they were implemented?

o How did they have an effect upon the prisoners?

o Has this basically changed? Why or why not?

Assignment 2- 2 to 3 pages

You have graduated from the AIU Online Campus, and now you are working for Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) within the long-term planning department of private prisons. As a Private Prison Design Specialist, you have the authority to conceptualize future prisons around the prison issues of today and tomorrow, so your supervisor has turned to you to discuss some issues in a paper of 2-3 pages to be submitted for review.

You have a reputation for thinking outside of the box while being realistic and because of this, your supervisor feels you can properly address alternatives to incarceration. Now you are to make the changes, as outlined below, based upon today's resources and prison systems.

Prisons are overloaded with inmates who are incarcerated for drug offenses. What is an alternative to incarcerating them? Describe how you would handle this type of problem without incarceration, and give reasons supporting why your solution would be more cost-effective and prone to rehabilitation. Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.

Assignment 3- 3 pages

While on routine patrol for the Any Town Police Department you notice a group of what appears be three underage male teenage kids and one female teen standing alongside the outside wall of a local convenience store in a poorly lit area. Since it is 1 AM in the morning on a Thursday night, which is in violation of your city ordinance regarding curfew, you decide to investigate.

When you turn into the driveway of the convenience store your patrol car headlights illuminate the group of three teens and you notice a cigarette in the hand of the lone female of the group and it appears to you that two of the males are holding beer cans. After asking for identification, you began your investigation and realize that several decisions will have to be made regarding the underage youth:

• In a list you make in your report specifically identify the status offense laws that are being violated by each of the underage teenage violators.

• Identify how you are going to process at the scene each of the underage teenage kid violators, then explain in detail why you made your decision to handle the status offense in that specific manner.

• Describe how you would handle any of the teenage status offense violators who is being uncooperative at the scene. How would this affect your decision on how to handle this status offense case?

• If you have one or more uncooperative parent who refuses to come to the scene and pick up their child would this affect your decision on how you handle the case, and if so what would you then do with the child?

Assignment 4 - 3 pages

There are several theories that explain why juveniles become delinquent. Some of the sociological theories include anomie, social disorganization, drift theory, and differential association theory. Locate a sociological theory (it does not have to be one of the theories listed previously), and explain that theory with its relation to juvenile delinquency.

Please note that sociological theories relate to society and external influences over a juvenile, not psychological influences (which relate to internalization within a person) or biological influences (which concern physical problems).

You are a sociologist, and you are noticing that the juveniles in your area are starting to cause legal problems and are beginning to overload the juvenile court system.

• Once you decide on the theory, describe how it relates to juveniles by explaining what the theory believes causes the juvenile problems.

• Explain what you could do in your position to aid in alleviating these problems.

Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.
