This assignment was designed for you to examine a leader's role in maintaining an alignment between organizational culture and structure in the operations of Biotech.

Your group will create a video, using the picture of the forest and trees and the case scenario below to discuss the relationship between organizational structure and culture. For the video, provide a written transcript to accompany the video.

Scenario - One of Biotech's largest suppliers of echinacea has come to Maria Santos, the Department Head of Purchasing with an offer of 100,000 pounds of echinacea, which has been genetically modified. It would be a substantial savings to the company were Maria to accept the offer. The producer/seller assured Maria that the echinacea was produced without any type of fertilizer. Maria decides to forego the offer.

You will:

Identify whether the forest represents the organizational structure or organizational culture, and explain why;

Identify whether the trees represent the organizational structure or organizational culture, and explain why;

Discuss the relationship between the forest and the trees (organizational structure and organizational culture)? Can one exist without the other? Why or why not?

Justify how Maria's decision supports the relationship between organizational structure and culture. To support the justification, review the Biotech Company Profile and determine what factors led to Maria's decision.

Be specific with your explanation.

Creating the Video - As a team, you will create a video with an accompanying transcript that answers the questions above. Your team may elect to create prompts such as a white board to illustrate the forest and trees in order to discuss the different questions.

As long as you are able to present a professional appearing video, it does not matter what program is used to create the video. Avoid using a cell phone.

It is important to give credit to those members of your team who participated in the creation of the video.

Creating the Transcript - Create the transcript first to ensure that when it is time to create the video the presenter is not talking off the cuff but presents a well-crafted presentation. The transcript should contain the support for your reasoning and the conclusions made. Although you will not be providing in-text citations in the verbal presentation, it is appropriate to use phrases such as, "According to..." and " Argyris stated..." Doing so will bring validity to your reasoning and conclusions. The use of in-text citations and a reference list is expected for the transcript.
