ASSIGNMENT -

There must be someone you know who could do with the help of an interior designer.

Whether it is an imaginary client or a real one, ask them to choose one room in their home that needs work on - whether it's an interior design project including a revised floor-plan; updated finishes, extra storage; or a project requiring new furniture and window treatments.

Ask to meet with your client on the design project premises - this first meeting could take up to an hour. Whatever the scale of the project, treat the meeting with the same level of detail. If you are unable to meet with a real client, you can

Identify the room they would like you to work on; then talk to them about their family members, lifestyle - (will children and/or pets be using the space); step out the size of the space; look at the condition of the flooring, walls; the wiring, window treatments; confirm their preferred colours and style of décor; and the function of the specific space.

Ask lots of questions - take mental notes, and also write them down, or send them a questionnaire ahead of time to ensure you cover everything required of you to translate the design brief.

Always walk away from this first meeting having touched on their budget, and cover your own fees at this early stage.

Once you have a good idea of the above, then you can work through the logical order of a project - to share your creative ideas and keep all 'on track'.

For your assignment:

1. Write a report on that first meeting. This is not for the client but to assist you.

2. Create a scope of work. For your tradespeople to quote off. Do not present to client.

3. Write a letter of acceptance and include a preliminary costing. Your letter should cover your fees, your creative services and your invoicing process. Your prelim will include the tradespeople's prices and approximations on furniture, window treatments, new carpet etc.

4. Create a mood board with a supporting description. Only once you have confirmation on your letter of acceptance do you then proceed to your creative services including mood board; floorplan; 3D drawing, and product sourcing and specifications.

If you treat this exercise as a real design project, you'll learn a lot about the realities of the job.

You have to do the first part (Write a report on the first meeting) only of the assignment.

YOUR FIRST MEETING - QUESTIONS TO ASK AND OBSERVATIONS TO MAKE

Have a good look at ceilings, floor, walls, woodwork and windows - what sort of condition are they in?

How's the wiring? Do you think it will need replacing? Will you need to add extra power points?

Is there enough natural lighting in the house - do you think it would benefit from extra windows or skylights? Are the existing windows big enough?

What's the state of the floor? Is it in good condition? Would the owners like to change it?

Are there floorboards under the existing flooring?

Is there adequate storage throughout the house? Is it enough for future needs?

How many people live in the house? How many people will be living here in the near future - for example, are there likely to be more children born or, at the other end of the scale, are children approaching university age and getting ready to move out?

If there are children living in the house, do they have friends come to stay?

Do guests come and stay overnight?

Are there any pets in the house? This could have a bearing on your choice of finishes.

Do elderly people come to stay, or is it likely that elderly people will move in at some stage? If so, you will need to consider non-slip flooring and perhaps increased lighting in some areas.

Does the client need extra rooms in the house - can they be created from attic or basement space?

Does each member of the household get enough privacy in the current arrangement - do you think that needs to be addressed?

What does each member of the family enjoy doing - if one, for example, plays the electric guitar, they'll need a soundproof area to do that in, especially if the rest of the family prefers reading!

Where do family members eat? Do they eat together? Does the family entertain? Where does that take place?

Where do family members relax? Does anyone do any work at home? This will affect lighting plans and also placement of power points.

Are there any rooms the client doesn't use? Are there any areas they would like to be bigger?

Ask the client what they like most about their present accommodation. What's the most important thing to them? What do they dislike most?

How would they describe their taste in furnishing - contemporary, traditional, minimal or it could be something else.

Does everyone in the family agree on decorating tastes, or will it involve a certain amount of compromise? Is the preferred style of decorating suitable for the house?

What colours does the client like? What colours do they dislike? Is everyone in the family in agreement over this?
