Assignment : Media and Race Interview

Conduct a one-on-one 30-minute interview with a peer of yours who is of a different race or ethnicity than you.

Ask at least the following questions in the interview. You may add additional questions based upon your peer's response:

How do you feel when your racial or ethnic group is wrongly depicted in traditional mass media?

Is your racial or ethnic group socially stereotyped in the media?

What main traits and behaviors of your racial or ethnic group are portrayed in the media?

When you watch media content that is related to your racial or ethnic group do you feel that it is fair?

Have you ever been personally affected by the images you see of your cultural group in the media?

How can the media work to become more culturally diverse?

Describe your interview experience in a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper. Include the following in your paper:

A detailed description about the interviewee and based upon his or her responses to your questions, a deciphering of the cultural dynamics that you believe inform your interviewee's communication strategies.

A discussion of the portrayal of your interviewee's cultural group in the media including conjecture as to the level of cultural awareness and
multicultural sensitivity demonstrated by the media you have chosen.

Include two or three examples and what multi-media strategies you think these examples utilize.

An articulation of the reason as to why social inequalities exist in the media and suggestions of possible solutions to perceived cultural
communication barriers.

An explanation of the ramifications of media using learned, ethnocentric communication in situations that require cultural awareness and
multicultural sensitivity. How can this be overcome?

Include the transcript from the interview at the end of your paper.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines, and include references from the interview.
