In this assignment, students should develop a report for Chris and Patricia's Legal support (CPLS). The case situation was described in Assessment 2. CPLS needs to solve the problem in selecting the most suitable vendor and associated ERP system. The submitted report should include research and discussions on major areas such as the following topics. Arguments should be supported by evidence. Recommendations for action should be provided.
Overview on the ERP purchase process and considerations on requirements
- present the needs assessment and requirements assessment of CPLS, based on the relevant studies in Assessment 2 (including necessary refinements)
- general guidelines to ERP purchase process, including discussion on various stages
Vendor research and information gathering
- research the marketplace for potential vendors and ERPs, identify alternative vendors (including SAGE and Odoo) and alternative ERP system offerings (including cloud-based systems)
- research on relevant literature and consider the situation of CPLS, short-list potential vendors / ERPs down to three
- present the research on each short-listed vendor (e.g. financial position, support issues, hardware & software infrastructure, direction and currency of software, release strategies and involvement of users in upgrades)
Detail evaluation on short-listed vendors / ERP systems
- research on methods for detail evaluation on vendors / ERP systems, e.g. fit/gap analysis
- based on requirements of CPLS, perform detail evaluation on all three short-listed vendors / ERP systems, recommend top one
Top vendor / ERP system
- present the ERP modules of the recommended top ERP system to various stakeholders of CPLS
- match CPLS's requirements to features of the ERP system, present the likely benefits
- identify any missing functionality and discuss options to resolve
- present the ERP system architecture and its implications, e.g. scalability
In this assignment, you should show relevant knowledge you learned from this unit and to demonstrate your understanding on all required areas, through further research beyond the unit materials. For students wish to have achievement higher than "Pass" level, you should demonstrate deeper learning through extensive research on relevant academic literature and high quality industry sources. This is not a situation of having single version of solution or "model answer". Successful arguments could be made for different options. High achieving students would demonstrate their competence in critical thinking, including compare and contrast different perspectives and make good recommendations. Your task is to present a persuasive and argumentative piece of writing in report form.
Students are required to use literature to support and illustrate your report. Assume the readers of report include technical and business (non-technical) managers. You can assume they are intelligent people who understand arguments and appreciate quality support evidence. You will be assessed on your ability to persuade the readers, so it is essential that you develop factual and logical arguments in your justifications and recommendations.
