Assignment -

I. Deviant acts - Want you to go out in your community and be deviant in some NON CRIMINAL way. For example, wear your clothes on inside out, carry a teddy bear around and treat it like a real human infant or talk out loud to yourself. You may work in groups...say if three people wanted to go on an elevator and face the wrong way and see what happens. Be creative in your deviance. Be sure that you do not violate any laws, do not harm yourself or others and do not put yourself or anyone else at risk of harm.

Whatever deviant act you engage in do it for an entire day or repeat it at least three times. Then in discussions tell me the following: (1) What you did to be deviant (2) Where you did it (3) What were the reactions of those around you or those that witnesses your deviance (4) Why you think people reacted that way.

II. Death Penalty - Go to the death penalty information center's online fact sheet. Look over the fact sheet and then answer the following questions.

1. How does the total racial composition of America (White 75.1%, Black 12.3%, Hispanic 12.5%*) compare with the racial composition of Death Row Inmates?

2. How does each region compare regarding its number of executions?

3. Compare the support for a life sentence without parole with the support for the death penalty. Were you surprised? Why? or Why not?

Now go to Amnesty International's website on the death penalty and answer the following questions:

1. Which countries committed the vast majority of executions?

2. Compare these countries in terms of different sociological factors. That is, what economic, social, political and religious differences are there between countries that put many people to death and those countries that put few or no people to death?
