Assignment - Emotion recognition, facial expressions and body language

Overview of Lab Report -

The first lab report is where you get a chance to put into practice some of the psychological skills you have been learning.

Some of the things you will learn as you complete this lab report are:

  • how to find psychological research articles using EBSCOHOST
  • how to read psychological reports and identify key findings
  • how psychologists test theories
  • how to write a report in APA format
  • how to summarise and rewrite ideas.

Remember to read through the complete instructions on how to prepare for and conduct this experiment before beginning to work on completing your assessment.

The following pages contain detailed background information, resource materials and instructions to help you successfully complete the assessment.

There are essentially five stages to completing your lab report:

1. Completing the background reading for the experiment.

2. Preparing to conduct the experiment.

3. Recruiting participants and conducting the experiment.

4. Writing up the lab report.

5. Submitting your completed lab report.

You need to ensure that you allow sufficient time for each stage.

You will need:

  • access to the internet to access the EBSCOhost database
  • five people that you can use as participants.

Resources available to you:

  • this set of instructions
  • your textbook
  • your writing guide
  • the library
  • the online course page (including forums and tips)
  • your lecturer.

Preparing to conduct the experiment and write the lab report

Preparing the groundwork for your report involves a lot of R&R - research and reading! Preparing to conduct the experiment and write the report will help you develop a better understanding of the area you are investigating and the main theories and issues within the field. You will then use this knowledge to help you find the most relevant articles to use as references and to help you write your lab report. As a quick summary, you will need to:

1. Read all of the information and instructions that relate to this lab report, especially the Background information section

2. Read and take notes on the section in your textbook on emotion

3. Find, read and take notes on the recommended articles.

In this experiment you will:

Find and read research articles about recognition of facial expressions, body language and emotion.

Recruit five participants and ask them to decide what facial expressions are being displayed by an actor in several photographs.

Record the emotions that each participant thinks the model in the photograph is displaying and analyse your data.

Write and submit a lab report. For Lab Report you will only need to write up your method (including Participants, Materials, and Procedure), results, discussion and references.
