Assessment Task

Design Proposal

Brief description of assessment task

This assessment task requires students to work in allocated groups to articulate the proposed design of their project and submit it as a written Design Proposal. Working as a group students need to draw upon their knowledge gained through the various learning activities for the unit, and propose a design which satisfies the requirements as set out by the teaching team.

Detail of student output

Student groups are required to submit a single written Design Proposal according to the assessment specification. The Design Proposal will include the proposed project design, discussion on progress to date in completing the required project and a safety plan relating to undertaking the project. It will also include an element of assessment related to professional ethics and sustainability as applicable to the project design.

Detailed assessment specification

The project

- Your project is to design and electronic/electrical circuit capable of driving detecting the presence of an object and the commanding a robot to follow it. You will do this using analogue electronics, i.e. just the electrical systems concepts learnt in this unit and no microcontroller or digital logic. The robot should have two sensors and be capable of driving two small motors.

o Hint - photodiodes and transistors...?

- Specifications relating to which components can be used, particular requirements etc will be discussed during the seminar sessions. These are important and essential teaching activities, please make sure to attend.

- Your group will prototype your initial design before the week 8 presentation and use the experiences gained to improve the design for the final assessment tasks.

- All the necessary knowledge required to complete this task will be covered in the theory covered in this unit. It is your job to design your particular solution.
- The assessment tasks for this unit relate to the project (with the exception of the online tests).

The design proposal needs to include adequate detail on the proposed design and should have the following sections:

Cover page Including Project title, date, unit code

Group members names and student ID

Proposed design Including diagrams, circuit diagrams, graphs, tables as appropriate. This should include justification as to why the particular solution was chosen, and the expected outcome. It should include necessary calculations as why the particular circuit was used and how it will work.

Practical report 100 words discussing how the proposed design meets professional ethical requirements and sustainability to be considered (covered in classes in Week 5)

Appendix including safety plan To be discussed in seminars in Week 5

The report should be between approximately 1000 words long.

The assessment rubric you will be assessed against will be placed on Moodle. It is worth familiarising yourself against the assessment rubric, as well as this specification and discussions with the teaching team in the seminars and other learning activities.

How can two sensors and two motors and basic electronics control a robot?

We wanted you to interpret the problem in your own groups and we took feedback and questions from students as we went along. We spoke about self-directed learning in Week 1.

To guide you towards a workable solution please see Cases 1 and 2 below.
