Assessment 2: Case Study

Instructions for students. Read the case study below carefully, and prepare a report addressing all parts of the case study. You can do this task in groups of up to three students, but you need to list the members of your group in the introduction to your report.

You are an employee of Cachet IT Systems, an IT company that offers network design, implementation and support services to other companies. You have been commissioned by XYZ, a financial services company to design a new network for their Melbourne office. XYZ have a small office (currently of 20 people) that has two local servers running an internal web application that they use for financial planning. The office also requires Internet access for all staff, and needs to support wireless as well as wired access. Mr. Titmus is the Office Manager, and he is the person who will be giving you the requirements for the network

Your task is to design the an access network for XYZ, write up your results in a technical report, make adjustments based on client feedback and demonstrate the connectivity using the Cisco Packet Tracer software. You will need to complete all the parts of the case study below, and include these in a report for Mr. Titmus

Part 1 Designing the initial network

Your first task is to design and demonstrate a basic access network for XYZ, based on the following business requirements obtained from Mr. Titmus:
- Two servers (server 1 and Server 2) set up on the network

- One single PC set up as a client machine (to demonstrate the required connectivity)

- One wireless router connected to Internet Service Provider's router

- All devices above connected via an Ethernet switch

- All IP addresses on XYZ's network are to be allocated statically. Suggested IP addresses are 192.16.1.20 for the PC client, 192.168.1.30 and 192.168.1.31 for the two servers, and 192.168.1.1 for the router/default gateway.
- The network number used by the ISP is 200.10.10.0. Therefore, your router port connecting to the ISP should be statically assigned to 200.10.10.0

Task 1 Design a network based on the requirements above in Cisco Packet Tracer. You are doing this to confirm your understanding of the requirements with Mr. Titmus
Take a screenshot and save it for your report. Your screenshot should look similar to the one below. (Note: You should replace S12345 Mike with your own student id and name so it authenticates your work)

Part 2 Preparing your technical report

The client has asked you to prepare a technical report giving more detail about the network you designed in part 1. In particular, you need to demonstrate the connectivity required (e.g. PC to server1, PC to router) so the client is confident the network will meet their needs. The client also wants a list of all interfaces configured and IP addresses assigned/MAC addresses so they can document the network if it later needs modification

Complete the table below listing the interfaces and IP addresses assigned/devices connected to each device. (Note: you will need to get this information from your network design in Cisco Packet Tracer. Note also that the switch, as a layer 2 device does not have an IP address. For the switch, you need to list the ports in use and the MAC addresses of each port)

You also need to show the client the results of your connectivity tests. In particular, you need to document that from the client PC, you were able to ping Server 1, and you were also able to ping the router port (demonstrating that you are able to get out of the internal network and onto the Internet)

Part 3 Revising your design based on client feedback

XYZ has reviewed your network design and technical report and is happy with the work you have done. However, they are now proposing a couple of changes to the network design:

1. Instead of assigning client machines static IP addresses, they want to run a DHCP service on Server 1, and assign addresses to client machines dynamically (the DHCP range should start at 192.168.1.100 to avoid IP address duplicates, and you should assign a maximum of 20 addresses). You need to set this up in your network design and demonstrate that is it working

2. They also want to configure a web server on the Server 1 to run their web application. They want your design to include these and demonstrate connectivity from PC 1

Once you have configured your DHCP Server 1, go into the client PC on your network design and test the functionality. Your client PC should now get the address 192.168.1.100 from the DHCP server

Part 4 Estimating the likely performance of the network

XYZ has expressed some concern about whether the network you have designed will be able to cope with the network load they will put on the network. They have provided you with some statistics on the various types of network traffic that they have on their network, and asked you to make a recommendation about what speed (e.g. 100 Mbs, 1 Gbps or 10Gbps) they should run in their network (Note: the switch you have implemented is capable of running all ports at all these speeds).

Calculate the total load on the network by completing the table below from the figures provided by XYZ

Based on the total network load calculated above, what network speed would you recommend for the XYZ network? (Note this down in your report)

Part 5 Calculating the cost of a future 10Gbs network upgrade

XYZ have asked you to prepare a report on the costing of a potential future network upgrade to 10Gbps. In particular, they want you to compare the cost of running a 10Gbps network with that of running a 1 Gbps network on their 20 client PCs and two servers. As the switch already supports 10Gbps, the major hardware expense involved in the upgrade would be new NICs on all clients and server computers, as well as new cabling from the computers to the switch to support the faster network connections.

They have asked you to use their preferred network supplier Startech.com to cost the alternative solutions

You also need to determine the support and training requirements for this network. Mr. Titmus would like to know who his staff should report an error to, and how they should do this. You can assume that Cachet IT systems has a toll-free network support number 1800 555 123 that is going to be made available to XYZ, and this number is to be given to all XYZ staff to report problems. Cachet IT systems also will be given remote access to XYZ systems to troubleshoot any reported network problems.
