Workplace A- Construction Company, Building Blocks Pty Ltd

Building Blocks Pty Ltd is a small-medium sized construction company that specialises in the construction and renovation of primary and secondary schools. It has been in operation for 8 years.

The company is comprised of the company Director (who is the owner of the business), 2 project managers, 4 site supervisors and 15 full-time construction employees. It also engages several building contractors, such as plumbers, electricians, bricklayers, plasterers etc. Four of the employees and many of the contractors are from non-English speaking backgrounds.

A few months ago, one of the employees was assisting the bricklayer with the cleaning of bricks and received a splash of diluted hydrochloric acid in the eye. The worker was treated for his injury in hospital. There was no Safety Data sheet on site to provide immediate first aid advice. The Company did not notify the WHS/OHS regulator as required.

The Company received a visit from the health and safety Inspector because one of the workers made a complaint about the lack of health and safety information and not reporting the incident to the regulator.

The inspector issued several notices regarding a range of noncompliance at the site, including failure to have readily accessible information and no system for notifying incidents.

The Company Director reflected that there were other incidents in the past few years (some which resulted in workers being off work for a few weeks) and numerous near misses.

Shortly after the inspector's visit, the Director engaged a full-time Health and Safety Manager to ensure that the company complies with their health and safety duties, including having ready access to all necessary health and safety information.
