As you might be aware, airlines segment the market and charge different rates from different types of customers so as to maximize the utilization of the aircrafts and the per-flight revenues. Airlines also overbook flights to account for cancellations, missed connections, and no-shows. Study the information on yield management in the textbook and the resources. Visit the travel and airline websites, and based on your personal experience, comment on the application of yield management by the airlines. How are different airlines trying to maximize the yield (revenue) per flight? How can the airlines simplify the tariff structure without significantly hurting their revenue per flight? How do you get the best deals while airlines are trying to maximize their revenues? What suggestions do you have for someone trying to get the best deal on a flight from Manchester to San Diego? If you are more familiar with some other business that uses yield management, such as hotels, you can tailor your comments to the business you are more familiar with. Otherwise, write your comments on the airline industry.
