As a renowned physical geographer, you have been commissioned by a studio in Hollywood to provide advice for a new thriller movie due in theaters next year. As a follow up to the popular films, "The Day After Tomorrow", "Armageddon", "10.5", "Supervolcano", "The Core" and Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth", you will advise the production of a movie called AXIS, in which the earth's axis suddenly shifts (for unexplained reasons) from 23.5 degrees to 28 degrees off the plane of the ecliptic.

Your job is to advise the studio about the kinds of weather and climate changes that would likely occur in the United States and around the world, as well as the adaptations that humans will have to make over time.

This is a "thought" question that requires you to review your knowledge of seasonality, upper level wind patterns, surface temperature regimes, and the impact of latitude (which means understanding the readings preceding this discussion). I suggest that you brainstorm some ideas on paper, then develop your best ideas into a creative statement. Focus on both surface and upper-level air patterns and temperature regimes, and perhaps even environmental issues such as global warming and creation of ozone in the higher latitudes. Be sure to include some ways in which human settlement is likely to change due to these climatic impacts. While there are no "right or wrong" answers, you will have to make some logical sense and justify your predictions with material from the course.

A few good ideas will be enough for each of you, as others will "fill in" the discussion with other ideas. NOTE: Please do not merely describe disasters, but EXPLAIN WHY and/or HOW changes happen. You need to show that you understand some of the processes that you have been learning. Also, all the changes are not necessarily disasters, but alterations in how things work at different places.

One more thing: Don't concern yourself with HOW or WHY the axis shifts for this discussion. It just does. Focus on the results of the shift. With your collective brains and ideas, you'll find that this discussion topic actually provides a wide range of ideas that together will likely provide a rather complete picture of changes that will take place on our planet.
