Article 2: Early Fall, 2012. "Why We Need to Support Gay Youth" Byard, E

http://www.diversityinc-digital.com/diversityincmedia/201209#pg44

The article "Why We Need to Support Gay Youth", by Dr. Eliza Byard talks about the importance of supporting youth who are lesbians, gay, bisexual, or transgender and making their school years easier so that they can have more successful lives. This is a critical time during these young adults lives and if they are being treated badly then they are more likely to drop out of school or not continue post high school graduation. In 1990, a student leader started a corporation called GLSEN, this has a heavy impact on various places in the community assisting those who have been victims or are in harmful situations because of their sexuality. GLSEN supports LGBT students by helping them become leaders, so they can hopefully be inspired to do 2 well for themselves in the future years. Dr. Byard is confident in the program and has stated that many people are impacted by it in a positive manner.

The common goal here is to help students realize that they cannot act in certain manners against the LGBT community. It will hopefully teach other students who do not respect LGBT students that there is nothing wrong with them and that biased actions can be very hurtful. All in all, by supporting gay youth it will help everyone to become better members of society. Chapter three is the most relatable textbook chapter to this article. In this chapter, the differences between what it means to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender are all addressed. Since these topics are addressed in this chapter it makes this article a little more detailed and has a strong correlation to the article.

The most valuable topic in this article includes the success stories of the students that have been impacted by the program. Harassment has always been in issue, but this topic especially has resulted in many hurt people. Today, there is always something in the news about LGBT and a negative aspect because someone has wronged someone else because they are different. A possible solution to this seemingly never ending circle of publicized hurt is to educate which is what this program is attempting to do. Many people in today's society do not know what it means to be LGBT, had they taken the time to learn they may stop being so rude on the subject matter. Just this factor alone would help the workplace. This process could be aided by seeing gay youths succeed and become highly successful in society which they can then become role models for other members of society and could close the barrier between the two opposing opinions. Hopefully, by having these people to look up to society and demonstrate that difference is just difference perspectives will change. Allowing LGBT students to continue on this successful path without bias and allow them to make their way to where they belong in a diverse workplace.
