Unit IV Discussion Board Question

The debate over which research approach is better has been discussed for years. What is your opinion on the controversy of whether qualitative or quantitative research is a more effective research method? Include your rationale.

Student Response to Unit IV

This is a good question, and for my field of study, HR, one is not more effective than the other in my opinion. Both are very much needed and as mentioned in the attached article, we need numbers for KPIs, attendance, forecasting, strategic planning, turnover rates, etc. However, we also need to approach HR/Human Capital from an observation perspective as well as dialog and interaction on a regular basis.

If I were to rely on one over the other, I would be missing some important indicators in performance and such. Let's say I have an employee in the inside sales department who has a lackluster track record in closing sales and generating revenue. Looking at the books, this would indicate a low-performer and one who is not promotable.

However just looking at the numbers does not let me see how they are interacting in their job, they are on the front lines and if something needs to be changed either with their job description or the expectations of the position/department, I would never know this without the every-day, critical discussions.

No amount of quantitative measurements is going to find out all the invaluable qualitative information, for example, that an "undercover boss" can discover.

That is why good managers are constantly seeking and evaluating the feedback of all staff at all levels. They are constantly performing their own organizational reviews (HR Group Management Consultants).

Thus, I need to use both of these approaches in managing human capital and moving the company forward.
