A challenge that current health care human resource managers are currently experiencing and have been for several years, is a nursing shortage. "The shortage is expected to become increasingly acute as the baby boomer generation retires, grows older, and experiences age-related illnesses" (Richardson, 2011, p. 1). The number of older nurses that are within a couple years of retirement age, will cause the current shortage to become a major problem.

Without enough nurses, the number of patients that a nurse is assigned to will increase, therefore not allowing a lot of time to help each patient. In a hospital setting, that will become extremely difficult, depending on the severity of the illness that the patient has. If a nurse is assigned to 20 patients then the quality of care is decreased.

My solution to the problem would be for the human resource managers to start visiting the nursing school and talking with the students about the opportunities that they will experience at their respective hospitals. I would also suggest that incentives be given for nurses that are willing to stay with a certain hospital for a set number of years (ex: pay for their nursing degree, sign-on bonuses, etc.). "To fill these open positions, Mission Health offers sign-on bonuses of $5,000 to $10,000. In return, depending on the bonus amount, the nurses must commit to a minimum length of employment. Mission Health also offers employees a referral bonus of between $1,000 and $5,000, depending on what position the person is recruited to" (Gooch, 2016, p. 2). I would also suggest that human resource managers visit local high schools and talk with the graduating seniors about going into the medical field and offer incentives, such as paying for nursing school. College is expensive and there is no guarantee that you will get a job right out of college, but to know before you start college that not only that your schooling will be paid for, but that you will be guaranteed an immediate job, is a big deal for senior students.

Working in the medical field, especially nurses and physicians, is a full of heartache and tears and not everyone is meant to be a nurse or physician. We are reminded in Hebrews 11:1,"faith is the substance of things hoped for; the evidence of things not seen." Being a nurse requires skills and faith, faith that God is in ultimate control, no matter what the outcome.

One of the biggest challenges that many healthcare organizations are facing today is a shortage of healthcare workers. Between nurses, medical assistants, physicians, and nurse practitioners, there's an an immense need for more. "At one time, the majority of physicians in the United States were self-employed, solo practitioners, or in partnership with one or two other physicians" (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012). The United States isn't the only country who is struggling with finding healthcare workers. In Peter Moszynski's article, "One billion people are affected by global shortage of healthcare workers," more than fifty-seven countries are in need of basic healthcare and are struggling daily with shortages of workers (Moszynski, 2011). "Mubashar Sheikh, the alliance's executive director, said that the World Health Organization estimates that ‘4.3 million health workers are needed to address the global shortage'" (Moszynski, 2011). Most of the fifty-seven countries that are really struggling with a lack of healthcare workers are rural countries.

In those countries there are many people who go their entire lives without ever seeing a physician (Moszynski, 2011). In a recent study that was conducted on the shortage of healthcare workers in Botswana, the "perceived shortage of healthcare workers in primary healthcare, which was believed to result an increased need for health services, inequitable distribution of healthcare workers, migration and too few such workers being trained" (Nkomazana, Mash, Shaibu, & Phaladze, 2015). The solution for the shortage of workers is to train those individuals who are adequate healthcare workers and then distribute them to facilities (Nkomazana, Mash, Shaibu, & Phaladze, 2015). Isaiah 6:8 says, "And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?' Then I said, ‘Here I am! Send me.'" (ESV).
