Case - External Analysis: The Identification of Opportunities and Threats

Case Discussion Questions

1. Using the information contained in the case, conduct a five-forces analysis of the U.S. Steel industry. What conclusion can you draw from this?

2. Do you think there are any strategic groups in the U.S. Steel industry? What might they be? How might the nature of competition vary from group to group?

3. Demand for steel is very cyclical. Why do you think this is the case? What might steel mak¬ers do to better cope with the cyclical nature of demand?

4. Given the nature of competition in the U.S. steel industry, what must a steel maker focus on in order to be profitable?

Please note the following :

· Each question is expected to be within 200 to 250 words.

· Up to a maximum of 70% of the allocated mark for each question will be assigned for the accuracy and completeness of the answer.

· Up to a maximum 30% of the mark will be allocated mainly but not limited on the demonstration of the following:

o Format for each question should be starting with an Introduction , Body 1 ,Body 2 and conclusion

o Showing of examples wherever applicable.

o Drawing graphs wherever applicable.

o Academic evidence supporting the argument.

o Logical flow and smooth transitions between arguments.

o ensure using an easy and simple language in the solution.
