The reason for going into the helping field

The reason for going into the helping field is the opportunity to help those that need to have their lives reconstructed in order to live better. It has been a very overwhelming feeling to be able to give a helping hand to others. This has been the goal from a teenager.

Throughout my life I have held position in jobs that have given me the opportunity and the ability to help those that may struggle with various obstacles in their life whether it has been through health, education, or life skills and it has made me feel like a blessing to be of assistance.

As a personal care attendant I help prepared food, companionship, grocery shopping, and to pay their bills especially for those who are unable to do it for themselves. For the clients that were mobile taking them to the mall, parks, and movies was very exciting and to see their faces and interact with them was priceless.

Being a paraprofessional in the school system was a heart-warming feeling to be able to help the emotionally behavioral children learn and be able to trust individual in their lives was sometimes a hard task but I have always been one not to give up so I continued till success was a must. There were a lot of difficult days and each child endured a lot in their little time on this earth and I tried to do the best I could to make a lasting effect on them. To see parents starting to take claim in their child's education was rewarding also. The biggest reward was when they graduate from high school and come back and give me that big hug and say thanks.(Tearful)
Prior to working in the school system I was a leadership training director for a teen recreational center. I was blessed to work with children, teens and adults and gave assistance and workshops to help build self-esteem, drug awareness, adolescent pregnancy, leadership styles. I help to build relationship with the community by having the children and teens volunteering to help the senior rake leaves, shovel snow, play bingo and arts and crafts at the nursing homes, and serve food at the homeless shelter. Also to them on field trips to courthouse, museums, amusement parks, movies and much more. Some would not have experience if they had not been in the program. Again, here is another priceless moment.

As a child growing up on the south side of Chicago was not easy. Majority of the children had parents who were on drugs and left the children to raise themselves. When my mother left I became very angry with the world. At the age of 14 I had my first child that was the moment when I realize there were other children out there that needed help. Many children grow up feeling alone with no help. Many adults over look teenagers and turn their backs on them. Some people are gifted to help others and some do not have the patients. As a child who was once in a situation feeling alone, I began to put up walls making it hard for someone to help. Children have trust, mental, and emotional issues making it impossible to get through. As a human service worker you must be able to be to love and handle with care.

Like many entering the human services field, I was motivated by the chance to create change in my own community. I've always wanted to help people. I've experienced many different communities as a navy spouse and I found that speaking with other military spouses, I was able to connect and empathize with them when our husbands deployed and help make the transition smoother. Now I can make my dream come true and help people while getting paid for it. Once I get settled into the human services profession, I knew there would be personal rewards and challenges. I find it's held true in almost all areas of human services, there is a focus on helping others finds safety, health or success within their own lives which I epitomize. The work is vital and valid, which is often motivation enough. For self-described people persons, careers in the field are ideal, because job duties revolve around the development of personal and professional relationships with others, whether children, adults or seniors and this is the reason why I chose to enter the human services field.

Conclusion

To finally have a degree in the human service field will be an open door to helping a large population and helping others is what God has blessed me to do. The reason is to make a person life worth living. To expand the overall quality of life for our society and to educate and reiterate from the young and to the old, we can rest assured that human services will be emphasized.
