A robbery consists of six of the following elements: Taking away and carrying away of personal property of another, with the intent to deprive permanently, by the use of force, fear or threat of force. Convenience-store robberies, truck-hijacking robberies and a bank robbery are all examples of this. Investigators can encourage businesses and citizens to take steps to ensure their safety. Limiting cash access at a bank could keep bank robbers from being able to take ridiculous amounts of money. Having convenient stores have high amounts of outdoor lighting to ensure that at night there is no chance of a robber going away without being caught is another measure that can be taken. Truck-hijacking levels could be lowered if truck drivers were more aware of their surroundings and to do their best not to fall for tricks that potential hijackers are trying to pull on them. Burglary is the crime of breaking and entering a house or other building belonging to another with the intent to commit a crime inside. ATM attacks, residential burglary and car, RV and trailer burglaries are all examples of this. ATM attacks are done by individuals who burglarize a building and then haul the ATM machine off in a U-Haul type of vehicle. These can be stopped by officers who are patrolling the area as a deterrent to the crime being committed in the first place. There are many solutions to residential burglary: stop delivery of mail and newspapers when you are out of town, arrange for a special watch on their premises by patrol officers, use timers to turn on lights and radios at various times to make it look like the residence is occupied, ask reliable neighbors to immediately report any suspicious activity to the police and to ask a trust neighbor to come over to adjust the position of drapes, blinds and other things. Many RV burglaries that are done are committed at storage sites so better security at the site you are using could stop a burglary from occurring.

The six elements of a robbery are: "(1) taking and (2) carrying away of (3) personal property of (4) another, with (5) the intent to deprive the victim permanently, by (6) the use of force, fear, or threat of force." (pg. 357) A burglary consists of the following elements in most cases: "(1) breaking and (2) entering (3) a dwelling house or other building (4) belonging to another, (5) with the intent to commit a crime therein." (pg. 382) The difference between a robbery and burglary is a robbery consists of taking from someone by force whereas a burglary involves the breaking and entering of a structure. Examples and prevention methods: Taxi cab robbery: Limit locations of drop off's, use cameras and GPS's in cars, do not take cash, frequently drop money off, be subjective on who enters the cab, and lock up the cash out of sight. Bank robbery: Use surveillance systems, limit times when safe is open, armed guards, alarm systems, tracking device in robbery money, and bait money. Convenience store robbery: Prevent loitering in front of the store, increased police patrols, robbery training by store employees, and use police to inspect the store for robbery prevention measures. Home burglary: stop mail and other services while away, arrange for family and friends or officers to stop by and check the property out, leave lights on timers, avoid putting valuables in front of windows, and put up signs such as beware of dog.
