Part I - Instruction

Group games and exercises are a useful tool for moving groups through the various stages or phases of group development. For example, icebreakers are often used to move groups through the "forming stage", in which participants get acquainted, set some ground rules, and establish roles. Sometimes, games and exercises are designed to help manage conflict and move groups from the "storming stage" to the "norming" and/or "performing" stages. Here are some useful resources in group work.

Review the links below, and find one that you can practically use. Present a brief description of the icebreaker, game, or exercise and discuss how you might apply it in a group setting. Be specific as to what outcome(s) you want to achieve by using the exercise.

Part II - Respond to the following comment

The icebreaker that really caught my attention was the yarn web exercise. This is when you go around the group and someone starts out by listing some facts about themselves. When someone can relate to anyone of the things listed, they state "me too." As you go, you wrap part of the yarn around your finger and throw the ball of yarn to the next person. In the end, it makes a web and ties everyone together. I definitely could use this in my groups. I help run the Gay Straight Alliance and the Anger Management group at my internship. Even though we've already started, I feel like ice breakers are something to keep it fun and helps connect everyone. I would use this exercise for the groups to get to know one another better and see where their commonalities lie. Both groups mention how they feel like they don't have many friends within the school, so I feel like this ice breaker could open new doors to friendships. Some of the facts that can be shared are interesting and might even tell us as social workers something new about the clients that we didn't know before!
