Topic: Multilingualism in the USA.

Why do you think the US is such a predominantly monolingual country? There are plenty of immigrants in the USA, but regardless of that majority of Americans born in the US do not have any mastery in any language other than English. Do you think it is a positive thing? Should government encourage Americans to learn other languages? If yes, which languages do you think the government should emphasize? Which reasons should the government use use encourage second language learning? If you think that the knowledge of second language is not necessary and should not be explicitly encouraged by the government, argue for your position as well. Do you think that speaking only English is patriotic, in some sense of this word? Also, think about the cases when people are being scolded for speaking languages other than English on public (you may google for some news stories). Do you think immigrants to the US should assimilate into English speaking environment, or it is their right to use their language in public? Do their accusers have a point?
