1. You own a busy coffee shop called Café Express in Glassboro, NJ. You have 75 employees and have had a very successful year. You have a former employee named Jamison Collins that has been collecting unemployment for the past three months. You are not happy about this because she was laid off on December 31st since she was a seasonal worker. Due to a recent business boom, you have offered her various shifts/days on weekends in March 2016, she has told you on each occasion this month that she is "unavailable to work" because she does not have a babysitter. Per the NJ Unemployment Handbook, should Ms. Collins be eligible to collect unemployment for those dates? Yes/No and explain why.

You have another former employee, Jason Jones, that has continued to turn down offers of employment or any shifts/hours due to his other job and you are still paying his unemployment. You have even mailed him a certified offer letter asking if he is available to work Full Time Monday through Friday 6am to 2pm but he never responded. What process/procedure could you follow in NJ to request a "relief from charges?" Is this possible?

2. You get promoted to a Vice-President position because you are dating one of the children of the CEO. Which method of internal staffing, if any, does this most closely approximate? Your company is implementing 360 degree feedback. Is it a bad idea to let managers decide who will evaluate them?

3. Your friend is a CEO. She says, (1) "There is an important type of motivation that is reduced when a company does performance appraisals. (2) If I earned no guaranteed salary I would be more likely to act in the best interests of the shareholders." Is your friend's first statement correct? Is your friend's second statement correct?

4. Your friend is a human resource manager. He says, (1) "Our computer programmers are all high-school dropouts so it is illegal for us to pay them a weekly salary. (2) We give employees pay raises if they learn how to speak and write in foreign languages." Is your friend's first statement correct? Which method of job evaluation, if any, is exemplified by your friend's second statement?

5. Your friend is a 25 year old Human Resources Managerat Princeton University(New Jersey). She says, (1)"Thanks to health care reform, I will be able to use my mother's health insurance plan even though my employer offers a health insurance plan. (2) When I am not at work I spend an unhealthy amount of time texting my friend about my personal problems, but my employer has a program that is designed to help me live more normally." Is your friend's first statement correct? Which benefit, if any, if exemplified by your friend's second statement?
