Discussion part 1:

Mystery Food Labels

It is important to participate in the Discussion early in the week. The Discussion Board is graded based on participation, just like any other week. Your grade is not affected if someone in your group does not participate. It is also not affected by whether or not you correctly identify what the item is. However, if you post one post that states what the label represents, that does not mean you will earn full points. Please do not just guess what the food is, but use the label as a clue and then act like a detective. It is recommended to start at the top of the label and work your way down to see what seems to stand out to you on the label.

During the unit week, make comments to your group about what you find and together, you will figure out the identity of the mystery food. Remember, work with your group members and use others' contributions to determine the identity of the food. Be sure to comment on each other's posts with supportive and encouraging posts. This is a great teamwork opportunity, a way to get to know your group mates, and collaborate in a meaningful way.

Part 2:

Topic 1: Obesity Discrimination

For this week's Discussion, please go to Doc Sharing and read the articles on obesity discrimination as well as the position statement from the Weight Bias Task Force.

Discuss the following in your initial post:

After reading the articles, explore your opinion on obesity by answering the following questions. Remember, you should remain professional at all times and outline your opinions in a respectful manner. Feel free to do some further reading or research by selecting the KU Library link on the left side of the classroom under Course Home and typing in "obesity and discrimination" in the keyword search box.

1. Are obese men subject to the same levels of discrimination as obese women? Why or why not?

2. What age group suffers the most from this discrimination? Why do you think it is so?

3. What advice would you give a friend who struggles with obesity and obesity discrimination?

Remember that your goal for Discussion Board is three-fold:

• to get involved throughout the entire week

• to contribute in a way that adds to the discussion and moves it forward in an original fashion

• to use the course content to form your posts and responses

As a guideline, your main Discussion post should be at least 150 words and approximately 50 words when you respond to classmates and/or your instructor. These are just guidelines and you may want to include more words to convey your message on the topic.
Keep in mind that when you post, you should include references such as the textbook and articles found online. The class is enhanced by sharing knowledge, so use Discussions as a way of creating a community resource for yourself and your classmates.
