Norton & Company, answer the following questions in a discussion post. While you do not need to number your responses, make sure you address each question and are thorough in your responses.

After your initial post, please respond to at least TWO of your classmates' posts.

• According to Elijah Anderson, in Code of the Street, what is the "code of the street"? What are its major elements? That is, what is the role of violence? Respect? Clothing and other trappings of success?

• What are the broader social and economic conditions that set the stage for the development and perpetuation of the code? How and why are these relevant?

• What are the characteristics of decent families? Street families? Which group is the majority? Why does the code of the street impact decent family members? Why is it important for kids from decent families to know the code? What is code switching and why is it important? How/why can kids from decent families end up becoming street?

• What are staging areas? What are some of their elements (e.g., leisure time, little guardianship)?

• By approximately what age does the code of the street fully come to be evidenced in school, according to Anderson (Code of the Street)? In what ways does the code undermine the educational process? How/why do schools serve as "staging areas"?

• How good are the schools? What are some of the problems with them? What prospects for jobs as adults do the youths he studies have?

That is, among those legally employed, what types of jobs do peers and family members hold? Are they jobs for which a high school education or more will seem useful?
