1. Karen Horney is often considered an early voice in feminine psychology. She was one of Freud's staunchest critics for his views on female development. She did, however, accept Freud's belief the unconscious conflicts shape personality. Her focus was less on sexual and aggressive drives and more on social and cultural roles as you mention. Can you discuss two concepts which Horney points to: basic hostility and basic anxiety? Can you define and give an example of each?

2. So, are you asserting with Horney that an individual such as Marilyn Monroe was a helpless victim who becomes extremely dependent on other people? Do you think she used this interpersonal style to avoid anxiety? What type of job or career do you believe an individual who according to Horney's theory, was often picked on and teased by his parents and other children when growing up and learned to keep people at a distance, spending much of his time alone might seek as an adult?
