Graying America means that more and more people are living to be of a great age and this will continue for the quite a time.

As the figure in the textbook on p295 shows in 1970 10 % of the population was over 65 but it also shows that the percentage may grow to 24 % in 2060. Most of these elderly will be white and non-Hispanic women.

Ageism is the prejudice and discrimination that someone experiences due to there age such as insulting jokes, elderspeak, and outright disrespect.

I picked the rise in sea level, I think when we talk about climate change we have to be very preside in what or how we say something because people are quick to correct. Climate change is a very big deal because climate of the temperature median for a long amount of time, so when climate changes a lot of things can go wrong for example sea levels rising.

I read that 0.13 inches (3.2 millimeters) a year is roughly twice the average speed of the preceding 80 years that the sea levels began to rise. I think it is our responsibility as the most conscious of being to take care of our planet, we can't just get up and leave and go somewhere else.

One change of the state of family in the U.S. that I am very excited about is the fact that marriage is not just seen as being between a man and a woman. The views of many are changing to see a family being also between gays and lesbians. In recent years many states now allow gays and lesbians to legally get married.

This is a huge accomplishment and very well deserved. The article I found states that 61% of Americans now support gay and lesbian marriage. It states that most of those that do not support gay and lesbian marriage are of conservative republicans and even this number is shifting to in favor of same sex marriage.

I chose to further look into Emile Durkheim as I find the way he thinks and the leaps he made for sociology as whole very impressive. I believe that the science of sociology is extremely important for everyone from entire societies down to the individual person.

The fact that he looked into suicide caught my attention because I believe that although this is a personal choice it leads to many lives altered forever, and is something that others could possibly catch or prevent if they knew the signs. He is also where sociology as a whole stems from and he forged a path that many would follow and help create along the way.

When I looked further into his background and accomplishments I discovered that he was raised in a religious household and many in his family were rabbis. He was also raised and schooled to become a rabbi himself but chose to pursue his own path and focus on schooling and teaching, then later became a sociologist.

Emile lost his son in 1916 and died just a year later in 1917, I find this interesting because his studies were so centered on suicide and while he did not commit suicide himself he did wither away once his son passed. It brought up a thought process of how our bodies react to grief and how Emile himself was feeling both mentally and physcially in that time.
