1. Describe the process by which ‘positive labels’ such as ‘I am perceived as smart’ become inhibiting and potentially stall or prohibit continued development.

2. In Dale Carnegie's ‘How to Win Friends and Influence Others’ the author advises to "give a person a fine reputation to live up to,". If we look at that in terms of establishing a label, explain why an ‘input-based’ label (work ethic, attention to detail or conscientiousness, etc.) vs a ‘trait-based’ label (smart, attractive, etc.) might lead to different outcomes.

3. Explain the relationship between goal type (mastery or definition), goal difficulty, and goal specificity in terms of influence on task performance (i.e. what combination leads to optimum performance, what combination potentially leads to non-performance due to rejection or avoidance)?

4. In what way does the historical view of human performance lead to pessimistic goal setting (hint – thinking of class discussion re: negative selection in the selection-streaming-diffrential and/or pessimistic planning) and what is the effect of this on development?
